Useful information:
Quick: what springs to mind when I say "quintessential American farmhouse"? I bet it's the farmhouse in the famous Grant Wood painting American Gothic. The Gothic Revival or Carpenter Gothic style wood-framed house used in the painting is real, in Eldon, Iowa. You can see it on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:2007-06-04-Gothic_House.jpg). The strong simple outline of the porch, the graphic shape of the gable window, and the crisp light-catching board-and-batten siding make a very compelling image so it's easy to see why Grant Wood chose it for his backdrop. A good recent reference is The New American Farmhouse by Jean Rehkamp Larson (Taunton). |
